A group of Korean researchers led by D. Jeong investigated the influence of strength training and the intake of essential amino acids on muscle quality, myokines and inflammatory parameters in young men.
The study participants were divided into four groups. The placebo group neither trained nor took EAAs (a big mistake, as it later turned out). Another group only trained, while another group was only allowed to consume EAAs. The subjects in the fourth group were very lucky: They were allowed to train and take EAAs as part of the study. Every bodybuilder's dream!
The test subjects took 3.66 g of EAAs twice a day. Admittedly, the composition of the EAA supplement was somewhat questionable in our opinion, but oh well (If one of the authors reads this article, please let us know! We would be happy to provide our premium EAA powder for the next study!).
After four weeks, the following results were recorded:
The combination of strength training and EAA supplementation was able to increase the fat-free body mass (muscle mass) of the subjects after four weeks.
The myokine irisin was significantly increased in all three intervention groups (training, EAAs & a combination of both), while myostatin was reduced in all three intervention groups.
Myokines are signaling molecules, i.e. messenger substances that are released by muscle cells. Irisin has a positive effect on muscle protein synthesis, but also on metabolism and fat cells, while myostatin is known to slow down muscle growth. A reduction in myostatin is therefore desirable for bodybuilders whose goal is to build muscle. Furthermore, the inflammatory factor TNF-α was reduced in all three intervention groups. Overexpression of TNF-α leads to muscle atrophy - the opposite of hypertrophy (muscle growth). Very critical for bodybuilders and athletes!
Last but not least – as if the previous results were not promising enough, the combination of training and EAA supplementation was able to improve various parameters of muscle strength. More muscle mass and more strength, that leaves nothing to be desired for a bodybuilder!
The authors conclude that the combination of strength training and EAA supplementation has a synergistic effect and is recommended for maintaining the health of adults. We agree with this recommendation. You have to train yourself, but you can get delicious EAA powder from us.
