In stressful situations (e.g. training, illness), the body's own production of L-arginine may not be sufficient. For athletes and physically active people, supplementing with the amino acid may be useful. L-ornithine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid and an L-arginine metabolite (metabolic product) that plays an important role in the urea cycle. L-ornithine is also a precursor of the amino acid L-citrulline. L-citrulline is in turn able to increase L-arginine levels in the blood.
